Spirit Electronics Adds Vicor’s Radiation-Tolerant Power Modules to Satellite Portfolio

Spirit Electronics has announced a strategic partnership with Vicor Corporation, bringing Vicor’s radiation-tolerant modular power solutions to its portfolio of space-grade technologies. The move strengthens Spirit’s position as a key supplier for satellite and aerospace applications, particularly in the growing low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO) markets.

Addressing the Power Challenge in Space-Based AI Systems

As satellite payloads become more sophisticated, especially with the integration of AI and machine learning capabilities, power delivery has emerged as a critical bottleneck. Traditional intermediate bus architectures, which rely on isolated DC-DC converters followed by multi-phase buck arrays, often fall short in delivering the high power density and low noise required by advanced processors.

Vicor’s patented Factorized Power Architecture (FPA) offers a compelling alternative. The system uses three compact, power-dense modules to minimize board-level losses, improve transient response, and maximize efficiency. These modules are designed to support high-performance ASICs, FPGAs, and processors used in satellite communications, earth observation, and autonomous space operations.

Radiation Tolerance Meets Scalability

Vicor’s modular approach is not only power-efficient but also radiation-tolerant, a necessity for long-duration missions in harsh orbital environments. The architecture is scalable and flexible, making it suitable for a wide range of aerospace applications including disaster monitoring, space debris retrieval, and defense operations.

Spirit Electronics is now offering evaluation boards for Vicor’s modules, enabling satellite developers to prototype and validate power delivery networks tailored to their mission profiles. The availability of these boards is expected to accelerate design cycles and reduce risk in satellite development.

Spirit’s Turnkey Advantage

Beyond distribution, Spirit Electronics provides full turnkey engineering services that span the entire integrated circuit supply chain. From foundry coordination and chip packaging to environmental and radiation testing, Spirit offers end-to-end support for aerospace customers navigating the complexities of space qualification.

CEO Marti McCurdy emphasized the strategic value of the partnership, calling Vicor’s technology “a game-changing power solution with high reliability, a compact form factor and proven space heritage.” The collaboration reflects Spirit’s ongoing commitment to sourcing innovative technologies that give its customers a competitive edge in the space race.

Vicor’s Broader Aerospace Footprint

Headquartered in Andover, Massachusetts, Vicor serves a diverse range of industries including high-performance computing, industrial automation, and telecommunications. Its aerospace and defense offerings have gained traction due to their compact design and robust performance under extreme conditions.

With flight heritage already established, Vicor’s power modules are poised to play a larger role in next-generation satellite platforms, especially as the industry shifts toward more autonomous and data-intensive missions.

As the demand for resilient, high-efficiency power systems grows, Spirit’s partnership with Vicor signals a timely alignment of engineering innovation and market need, one that could reshape how satellites are powered in the AI-driven orbital frontier.
