Electra Reveals Turbo Electric Airliner Concept for NASA’s AACES 2050 Initiative
Electra has introduced a new turbo electric aircraft concept developed under NASA’s Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability 2050 program. The study examines how targeted electrification, advanced aerodynamics, and integrated propulsion placement could shape the next generation of commercial aircraft with more than 100 passengers. The concept is positioned as a mid century airliner architecture that remains compatible with real world airline operations while pursuing measurable efficiency gains.

Double Bubble Fuselage and Distributed Propulsion Drive Efficiency Gains
The conceptual design features a wide double bubble lifting fuselage that allows the body to contribute additional lift. Two underwing turbofan engines generate both thrust and electrical power, which is routed to tail mounted electric fans that ingest and re energize slower moving boundary layer air. Electra’s analysis indicates that this configuration could yield up to a 17 percent efficiency improvement beyond expected 2050 advances in structures, engines, and aerodynamics.
Electra frames the design as part of a broader shift into a third era of flight, one where electric propulsion enables new airframe architectures without departing from practical airline and airport constraints. The company notes that the concept is intended to be buildable, certifiable, and operationally realistic rather than a purely theoretical exercise.
Designed for Airline Compatibility and Passenger Throughput
The aircraft is sized to fit within existing airport gates and uses standard jet fuel or sustainable aviation fuel, avoiding reliance on charging infrastructure or unproven fuel systems. The double bubble fuselage supports a twin aisle cabin within a narrowbody footprint, offering potential improvements in boarding efficiency and passenger comfort.
Research Led by Electra’s Future Concepts Team
The study was led by Electra’s Chief Engineer for Research and Future Concepts, Dr. Alejandra Uranga, whose prior NASA sponsored work at MIT helped advance earlier double bubble and D8 configurations. The AACES 2050 effort revisits that architecture with new capabilities enabled by electrification and distributed propulsion.
Electra produced 11 technical papers documenting the models and methods behind the concept and contributed an electrified aircraft design suite built on NASA’s open source Aviary tool. These resources are intended to support the broader research community and accelerate industry wide progress.
Broad Industry and Academic Collaboration
The AACES 2050 team included contributors from American Airlines, Honeywell Aerospace, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, Hinetics, MIT, the University of Michigan, and the University of California Irvine. NASA’s objective for the program is to encourage bold thinking and leverage emerging propulsion technologies to expand the design space for future commercial aviation.
Electra leadership emphasizes that maturing the concept will require a NASA accelerated technology initiative, including work on a double bubble X plane, multi megawatt generators, and kilovolt class power distribution systems.
