ISS and HAAS Alert Demonstrate Breakthrough in Hybrid V2X Interoperability

INTEGRITY Security Services (ISS) and HAAS Alert have unveiled a pioneering demonstration of hybrid Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) interoperability, bridging the gap between cellular-based Network V2X and traditional Direct V2X systems. This marks a significant step toward a unified, authenticated vehicle alerting ecosystem, with implications for both ground mobility and aerospace applications where secure, real-time communication is paramount.

Connecting Safety Cloud to SCMS: A Technical Milestone

At the heart of the demonstration is the integration of HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud platform with ISS’s Security Credential Management System (SCMS). Safety Cloud delivers real-time hazard alerts from emergency responders and roadway operators to millions of connected vehicles, including those from Stellantis, Volkswagen, and Škoda, as well as navigation apps like Waze and Apple Maps.

By embedding ISS’s TrafficAuth-SCMSclient libraries into Safety Cloud, the alerts now carry SCMS-compliant digital signatures, enabling end-to-end authentication without relying on proprietary carrier infrastructure. This ensures compatibility with IEEE 1609.2-compliant V2X devices and sets a precedent for secure, scalable communication across mixed environments.

Implications for Aerospace and Defense Communications

While the demonstration is rooted in ground transportation, the underlying architecture has clear relevance for aerospace systems. Hybrid V2X models, capable of operating across both direct and networked channels, mirror the communication challenges faced in unmanned aerial systems (UAS), autonomous aircraft, and space-based platforms.
