Cambium Expands Directed Energy Protection Technology for Larger Aerospace Applications

Cambium, a developer of advanced materials for defense and aerospace applications, has begun transitioning its bio enabled counter laser and counter directed energy technology to support larger form factors and higher threat levels. Under a new U.S. government contract, the company will focus on protecting aircraft transparencies such as windscreens and canopies, along with optical sensors used on aircraft, satellites, and other airborne systems.

The effort builds on a recently completed project that advanced multi format laser eye protection for dual use defense applications. The new phase will evaluate the material platform’s ability to maintain visual clarity and color accuracy while mitigating a range of laser and directed energy threats across the visible and near infrared spectrum.

Addressing a Growing Operational Hazard

Laser incidents involving both commercial and military aircraft have increased significantly in recent years, with tens of thousands of reported cases annually. Even low power handheld lasers can cause flash blindness or long term injury, and higher power directed energy systems present additional risks to flight crews, sensors, and mission performance. Cambium’s work aims to provide scalable protection solutions that can be integrated into aerospace platforms without compromising visibility or system performance.

Company Leadership Highlights Dual Use Focus

Stephan Herrera, Chief Marketing Officer at Cambium, noted that the project reflects the company’s commitment to advancing dual use technologies at a pace aligned with operational needs. The company’s materials platform is designed to support rapid adaptation across multiple domains where directed energy threats are becoming more prevalent.
