Increased Capacity for High Precision CNC Machining

Protolabs has enhanced its CNC machining operations to deliver end use metal and plastic parts with tighter tolerances, greater precision, and a wider range of functional and cosmetic finishes. These upgrades are designed for drone programs that require continuous design refinement, customized payload configurations, and adaptable hardware. The company’s ability to deliver parts within days supports accelerated development timelines for high performance unmanned systems.

Additive Manufacturing Tailored to Drone Requirements

Through a partnership with HP Additive, Protolabs has expanded its Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing capacity to meet the needs of drone engineering teams focused on lightweighting and aerodynamic optimization. MJF technology enables thin walled, lightweight components that maintain structural strength, making it well suited for ducts, housings, brackets, and snap fit enclosures used in avionics cooling, payload integration, and field maintenance.

The process uses Nylon PA 12, a material known for its strength to weight ratio, impact resistance, and durability in demanding environments such as extreme temperatures, high winds, and rugged terrain. These characteristics align with the operational profiles of both commercial and defense unmanned aircraft.

Strong Growth in Drone Sector Demand

Since 2023, Protolabs has seen revenue from drone customers increase more than ninety percent, with a compound annual growth rate near forty percent. This growth reflects broader expansion in the global drone market, which analysts estimate at up to sixty nine billion dollars today and project to reach one hundred forty billion dollars within the next decade. Increased investment in aerospace and defense, combined with rapid adoption of commercial drone applications, continues to drive demand for rapid, on demand manufacturing.

High Mix, Low Volume Expertise for Aerospace Programs
