Frontgrade’s SimpliStor: High-Speed, Radiation-Tolerant Data Recorder for Space

Frontgrade Technologies has launched its SimpliStor Solid-State Data Recorder (SSDR), a next-generation storage solution designed for the most demanding space missions.

Key Takeaways

01

SimpliStor offers 2.5 TB of high-speed, low-latency storage in space-qualified form.

02

It is highly radiation-tolerant and designed for extreme operating conditions.

03

Its architecture supports both simple NAS-style deployment and advanced on-board analytics.

04

This product empowers next-gen space systems to collect, analyze, and preserve more data more efficiently.

Breakthrough Performance in Orbit

SimpliStor delivers 2.5 terabytes of capacity in a compact 3U SpaceVPX form factor. It supports 10 Gbps throughput, with continuous “store-to-full” capability and a very low latency (under 100 microseconds). That combination enables satellite and spacecraft systems to record massive streams of mission data reliably.

Built for Harsh Environments

This SSDR is radiation-tolerant, designed to survive 30,000–50,000 rad (Si) total ionizing dose, and immune to single-event latch-up. It operates across a wide temperature range (–25°C to +65°C) while consuming less than 25 W. These traits make it ideal for long-duration, data-intensive space missions.

Simplified Integration & Smart On-Board Processing

SimpliStor offers a single 10GBase-KR Ethernet link, functioning much like a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. For more advanced use cases, it also provides a 4-lane PCIe Gen 3.0 interface. This allows on-board processing — such as AI analytics or data compression — to run directly on the recorded data, reducing reliance on limited downlink bandwidth.

Mission Impact

By combining high throughput, resilience, and on-board interface flexibility, SimpliStor gives satellite operators a powerful tool to handle increasing data loads. Whether it’s high-resolution imagery, science payloads, or real-time analytics, SimpliStor helps future missions become more capable and autonomous.
