SpiderOak and SDA Advance Zero-Trust Encryption for Space-Based Networks

In a strategic move to bolster cybersecurity across orbital assets, the Space Development Agency (SDA) has awarded SpiderOak a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to deliver a next-generation High-Assurance Internet Protocol Encryptor (HAIPE). The system will integrate zero-trust principles into SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA), a distributed mesh network of space and ground assets designed to support U.S. defense operations in contested environments.

Zero-Trust at the Tactical Edge

SpiderOak’s solution introduces microsegmentation, decentralized identity-based authentication, and edge-based policy enforcement to SDA’s on-orbit “red” networks. This marks the first deployment of zero-trust architecture in space, a significant milestone for cybersecurity in aerospace. By embedding these capabilities directly into the PWSA, the agency aims to ensure mission resiliency and data integrity even under adversarial conditions.

The encryption backbone of the system will be Collins Aerospace’s Apollo crypto module, a programmable, high-assurance device that enables secure access to data and applications at the tactical edge. Combined with SpiderOak’s software stack, the joint solution offers fine-grained segmentation of data flows and continuous trust verification without requiring additional hardware.
